Other deaths Vivien Thomas, a technician who helped develop an operation that allowed surgeons to make closed-heart repairs of disorders that made babies' skin appear blue, died Tuesday, said officials at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore. Thomas, who was 75, died after a long illness. Thomas worked with surgeons Alfred Bla-lock and Helen Taussig to develop the "blue-baby" operation, which they first performed in 1944 while he offered suggestions and answered questions. The blue-baby condition is "a congenital heart disease characterized by four disorders in the heart and large blood vessels," said Joann Rodgers, a Hopkins spokeswoman. "It is any of the four major disorders children are born with that create a lack of oxygenation so they literally look blue, instead of a healthy pink." Her sister, Teresa Giannetti, 23, who also lived in the mobile home, was admitted to Kent General Hospital with a gunshot wound of the back, according to Pepper.

She was in fair condition Tuesday night, a hospital spokeswoman said. Pepper said Giannetti's boyfriend, Don F. Grissom, 18, of near Felton, was treated at the same hospital for a wound to his left hand. The shootings happened about 2 a.m. at the mobile home park on Delaware 8 east of Dover, according to Pepper.

He said Giannetti called police, but the shots were fired before troopers arrived. Body found near Delmar DELMAR, Md.
