Teddy David Young. By Sam Waltz Dover Bureau SMYRNA Jimmy brought his car to school here the other day. Students gathered around the sporty-looking model while Jimmy explained some of its functions, took apart some of it and just generally filled them in on his hobby. Jimmy (not his real name) is a slow reader. His school work has been affected by it, and, as a result, he had developed a distaste for his school studies and suffered some loss in his own self-esteem.

The car incident was very much a planned part of his classroom training. It brought into his educational experience something he enjoyed, something he could be verbal about and, as a result, something that enhanced him in the perspective of his peers and contributed to his own self-esteem. Jimmy is just one of the 180 below-grade-level reading students who have joined 80 handicapped pupils in Smyrna's "compensatory education" l. piugiam, JUM UlUlIlg lift lilSL year here. The program, started under a $30,000 Delaware Department of Public Instruction grant, is built into the rest of the high school curriculum so that it is open to all students, according to Larry Pratt, assistant principal of Smyrna High School.

"Some kids come in and out of the program at various levels." said Pratt. "Some are in it 2 to 3 hours, some half-days, some all day. It's not a self-contained program." Pratt said the program is set iid for the physically handicapped and socially-emotionally maladjusted student, as well as slow learners and others who need remedial work in reading. "One of the big things is the development of self-esteem," Pratt said. "It's very essential to reestablish their self-confidence and self-esteem.

A lot of kids have been turned off through failure." The Smyrna program is being continued into its second year, entirely under local SMYRNA Honor students will be the speakers at Smyrna High School's commencement exercises Sunday, June 8, at 8 p.m. in the school auditorium. Baccalaureate will be in the auditorium 5 hours earlier. There will be an awards ceremony May 27. The senior class: Mary Ann Alois, Janett Doretta Alter.
