KENT SUSSEX NEWS JOURNAL FRIDAY, JAN. 20, 1995 OBITUARIES W. Levis Phipps 61, Centreville dairy farmer CENTREVILLE W. Levis Phipps who lived on a farm on Owls Nest Road all his life, and owned and operated it for 20 years, died Wednesday of cancer at Southern Chester County Medical Center, near Jennersville, Pa. He was 61.

The farm, just west of Centreville, is among the last dairy farms in the Wilmington area. Mr. Phipps was descended from one of the area's old Quaker His great grandfather, William Dilworth, had owned and operated Centerdel Farm, where his daughter returned from Wilkes- Barre, after the death husband. Her son, Mr. Phipps' father, eventually took over the farm; his son joined him in 1956 after graduating from Penn State University and a stint in the Army at Dix, N.J.

Mr. Phipps took Port, the opera, tion after his father's death in 1974 and passed control to his own children in October. In the 1970s, his herd of 67 Holsteins, became the state's third to receive the progressive breeders VELMA M. ATKINSON, a former By JOHN WARD Special to The News Journal teacher in New Castle-Gunning Bedford School District schools for 30 years, died Thursday of congestive heart failure in St. Francis Hospital, Wilmington.

She was 83 and lived in Mendenhall, Pa. Mrs. Atkinson, who taught third and fifth grades, last taught at Manor Park Elementary School, Bassett Avenue, New Castle, Del. She retired in 1975. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, the National Education Association, the Retired Teachers Association and Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mendenhall.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Leonard Atkinson; a son, C. Wayne of Smyrna, four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. A service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown roads, Milltown, where friends may call at 10. Burial will be in Longwood Cemetery, Longwood.

DEMHOFF, 78, of Park Avenue, Georgetown, died award of the National HolsteinFrisian Association for top herd quality, production and breeding. In 1978, his Holstein, Heli, who was raised in the farmhouse basement, set a state record for butterfat production. Centerdel is now half its original size the rest is the Pentland development off Snuff Mill Road.

The milking cows are now at a farm near Kennedyville, operated by Mr. Phipps' daughter, Laura Phipps-Douthit. A birthright member of Hockessin Friends Meeting, Mr. Phipps was a member of Centreville Odd Fellows Lodge and the state farm and small business Better Business bureaus. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Phyllis D.

ADELE S. BLACKWELL, a retired Seaford boutique manager, died Wednesday of heart failure in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Blackwell, 81, of Seaford, was born on Taylors Island, Md. She managed Maggie's Boutique from 1970 until retiring in 1980.

Earlier, she worked in the Seaford Public School District for 6 years in the 1950s, and was a secretary for the Seaford Police Department from 1960 until 1970. Mrs. Blackwell, whose three sons were Eagle Scouts simultaneously, strongly supported Scouting. She is survived by her husband, Lewis J. Blackwell; three sons, Sandy Barry C.

and L. James all of Seaford; two brothers, Robert Shenton of Taylors Island and Calvert Shenton of Claymont, a sister, Helen Haske of Catonsville, and five grandchildren. ELIZABETH ROACH GOGOLIN, 42, of 23320 Burbank Woodland Hills, died Jan. 9 of complications from Crohn's disease in West Hills Medical Center, Woodland Hills. Mrs. Gogolin, a native of Smyrna, graduated in 1970 from Smyrna High School and in 1972 from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She was a longtime member of Stump Corner 4-H Club.

She is survived by a son, Keegan and a daughter, Shaya Lyn Gogolin, both at home; her mother, Doris R. Roach of Townsend, two brothers, Richard P. Roach of Hickory, N.C., Phillip J. Roach of Newark, and a sister, Lynda M. Dunning of Dover, Del.

A memorial service was Jan. 12 in California. EDITH M. GRAHAM, 90, of Lakelawn Drive, Milford, died Wednesday of heart failure in Milford Memorial Hospital. Mrs.

Graham was the office manager of several W.T. Grant Co. variety stores in the Philadelphia area. She was office manager of the Levittown store, where she had set up the office and hired the staff. In recognition of her work, in 1964 she and W.T.

Grant cut the ribbon of the Levittown store the chain's 500th. She retired in 1970. She moved to Milford in 1985 from Denville, i N.J. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Germantown, enjoyed sports, especially Phillies baseball, and knew each players' batting average, said her son-in-law, Walter Bartlett of Milford. are a son, Harry J.

of Elizabethtown, a daughter, Natalie Bartlett, with whom she had lived for three years; five grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Burial will be in Chester Cemetery, near Chestertown. MILDRED M. GRIFFIN, 90, died Wednesday in Foulk Manor North Nursing Home, Foulk Road, Brandywine Hundred, her residence since 1991. Born in Sheffield, in 1904, a graduate of the Birmingham (Ala.) Southern College. worked as a librarian, teacher and secretary in Birmingham.

She and her husband, George F. Griffin, moved to Franklin, N.C., in 1964. He died in 1981 and Mrs. Griffin moved to Delaware in 1991. She is survived by a niece, Lois M.

Osborn of Wilmington; a nephew, R. Glynn Mays Jr. of Silver Spring, and several great -nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service will be announced later. LORETTA MARIE SHUSTER HAVRILAK, 65, of 105 Middle Road, Hilltop Manor, Holly Oak, died Wednesday of cardiac arrest at home.

She retired in September after 18 years. Earlier, she was an operating room nurse at Riverside Hospital, Wilmington and a charge nurse during evenings and weekends at the Medical Center of Delaware's Delaware Division Hospital, Wilmington.

She was a graduate of Bellevue School of Nursing, New York City. She was a member of St. Helena's Catholic Church since 1964 and worked on its annual Christmas Bazaar. She was a supporter of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. Mrs.

Havrilak traveled to Africa to participate in Operation Smile the program to assist people with reconstructive facial surgery. She had planned to travel to Colombia in June to participate in a similar program called Healing the Children. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Andrew Havrilak; two sons, Mike of Wilmington and Bruce P. of Chicago; two sisters, Helen Soohy of Beaverdale, and Dorothy Rubin of Berkeley, and two grandchildren. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Healing the Children, Box 129, New Milford, attention David Hoffman, D.D.S., or Lawrence Herman, D.M.D. LEONARD HITE, 90, a longtime New Jersey State Police mechanic who moved to Talley Hill, Brandywine Hundred, after retiring, died Wednesday pneumonia at Christiana Hospital." Raised in Johnstown, Mr. Hite served as an Army aircraft mechanic in Europe during World War II. While with the New Jersey State Police, he lived in Washington Crossing, N.J., with his wife, Elizabeth Hite.

After his 1964 retirement, the couple moved to the Eastern Shore town of Georgetown, on the Sassafras River. After his wife's 1985 death, he moved to the Talley Hill home of his niece and nephew, Shirley and Jim Fleegle, at 22 Dansfield Drive. In addition to the Fleegles, he is survived by a sister, Margaret Burnett of near Los Angeles. Services will be private. WILLIAM KELLY, a member of Roxana Wesleyan Church for more than 60 years, died Wednesday of complications from pancreatic cancer in Atlantic General Hospital, Berlin, Md.

Mr. Kelly, 84, of Frankford, served on the church board for 45 years. He was a Sunday school teacher for 50 years and a representative to the Delmarva District Conference of the Wesleyan Church for 56 years. The Chincoteague, native was an oil burner technician at Hickman Willey in Selbyville for 22 years, retiring in 1976. He also had been a poultryman.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hazel Mae Lekitis Kelly; two sons, Roland W. Sr. of Seaford and Dr. Ronald D. of Hastings, three sisters, Maude Murray and Violet Rickards, both of Frankford, and Janis Burbage of Delmar; four brothers, Elisha Hickman of Frankford, Donald Hickman of Dover, Delmus Hickman of Ocean View and Jack Hickman of Bethany Beach; four grandchildren and three greatgrandsons.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at Melson Funeral Services, Thatcher Street, Frankford. A service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Roxana Wesleyan Church, where friends may call at 1. Burial will be in Mariner's Bethel Cemetery, Ocean View. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Roxana Wesleyan Church building fund, Roxana.

LUCILLE LOGAN, 50, of Mount Joy near Millsboro, died Wednes- day of a heart attack in Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mrs. Logan worked at Vlasic Foods Inc. of Millsboro and Paramount Poultry of Harbeson. She retired in 1973 because of disability.

She was a member of Pentecostal Prayer Room Holiness Church, Millsboro, where she was an evangelist and usher and sang in the choir. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Randolph L. Logan; two sons, Marvin L. and Glenn and a daughter, Barbara Ann Logan Jones, all at home; two brothers, Clarence Brown of Red Bank, N.J., and Isaac Brown of Toms River, N.J.; a sister, Mary Brown of Perth Amboy, N.J.; and a grandson. A service will be at 1 p.m.

Saturday at Pentecostal Prayer Room Holiness Church, Old Landing Road, Millsboro, where friends may call at noon. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Georgetown. RUTH W. LUZZI, of rural Lewes, died Wednesday of respiratory failure in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She would have been 80 Monday.

Mrs. Luzzi, a 1938 graduate of Beebe School of Nursing, was a registered nurse at Beebe Medical Center and Clinic for 45 years. She retired in 1980. She was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church, Lewes.

Surviving are her husband of 55 years, F. Jack Luzzi; a daughter, Naomi L. Rickards of Lewes; a sister, Marie S. Willard of Claymont; and two grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m.

Saturday at St. Jude's Catholic Church, Five Points, Lewes. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be private. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Beebe Medical Center School of Nursing, Lewes.

MARK A. RIVERS, 27, of Philadelphia, formerly of Wilmington, died Wednesday of complications from AIDS in Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia. Mr. Rivers, born in Dover, had lived and attended schools in Wilmington. He is survived by his parents, Joyce and Charles Rivers of Woodstock, and a sister, Karen A.
