William L. Gerow, Delaware sports star By KATHLEEN HAIGH Special to The News Journal BRANDYWINE HUNDRED William L. Gerow who was labeled Delaware's fastest human in 1936 and was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1994, died Tuesday at his home in Shipley Manor. He was 79 and was formerly of Blue Rock Manor. Mr.

Gerow starred in basketball, soccer and track at the University of Delaware, earning nine letters. In 1981, he was named the university's outstanding alumnus. He was unbeaten for seven years in the half-mile during his college and high school years at P.S. du Pont, and his record in the half-mile stood for 17 years. He was president of the first graduating class of P.S.

du Pont and was named outstanding athlete in 1936. In 1976, he set a record for the 880 in the 55 to 60 age group at the Philadelphia Masters Track Meet, and was also the event's official starter.
