Helena's and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic churches, where he served on various committees. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Carrcroft Civic Association and was a former finance board member of the United Way of Delaware. His favorite hobby was growing roses, and for many years he participated in the Jackson Perkins Rose Research Test Panel, growing and evaluating new species of roses prior to their introduction into the market. His wife of 56 years, Margaret K. Verbanc, died Dec.

2. Survivors: sons, John A. and Richard both of Wilmington; daughters, Margaret K. Zecca of Telford, and Susan V. Os-bourn of Wilmington; six grandchildren.

Mr. Dean was a heavy-equipment operator at Dover Air Force Base. He was a veteran of World WarH. Survivors: wife of 49 years, Nellie Lorraine Griffin Dean; sons, Maurice W. of Goldsboro and Bruce H.

of Bear; daughters, Gaynelle Bledsoe of and Maureen Wilnetta Huggard of Goldsboro; sister, Ruth Washington of Goldsboro; 18 grandchildren. His brothers, Herbert and Calvin "Bus" Dean, died in 1997. Service: 11 a.m. Monday, Lockerman Church, Groce Chapel, Goldsboro. Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m.

Fols, a homemaker, lived in Wilmington until the 1970s when she moved to North East. She moved back to Delaware in 1993. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Her husband, Charles H. died in 1992.

A LAVA, 67, of Port St. Lucie, died Wednesday in Columbia Medical Center. Mr. Alava lived in his native Wilmington, for 48 years before moving to St. Petersburg in 1979, and was a resident of Port St.

Lucie for seven years. Before retiring five years ago, he was a pilot for Altair Airlines in Philadelphia for more than 16 years He attended Villanova University. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Quiet Bird-men and the U.S. Power Squadron, all in Wilmington. He was a Korean War Air Force veteran.

Survivors: wife of 37 years, Mae Alava; daughters, Lynn Mercer and Susan Gentile, both of Port St. Lucie, Vicki Alava and Valerie Ann Alava, both of St. Petersburg, and Leslie Campbell of Jensen Beach; sisters, Lois Walker and Claire Potocki, both of Wilmington and Jane Darby of Rockville, two grandchildren. BAER, 90, of Bear, died Thursday in Arbors at New Castle nursing home. Mrs. Baer retired from the Governor Bacon Health Center in Delaware City. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Delaware City Senior Center. Her husband, Clarence F.

Baer, died in 1963. Her son, Kenneth James Baer, died earlier this month. Survivors: sons, George of Harrington, and Donald and Robert, both of Bear; daughter, Ida Jan-nuizzio of Wilmington; brother, Frank Titus of Shickshinny, 18 grandchildren and 23 greatgrandchildren. Singerty Fire Company oWEIkton and Medic II. John J. Verbanc, a leading organic chemist in the area of synthetic rubber research, died Fri day in St. Francis Hospital. He was 84 and lived in Carrcroft, Brandywine Hundred.

After receiving his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Mr. Verbanc Notre Dame in 1938, Mr. Verbanc became a research chemist in the DuPont elastomers chemical division in Deepwater, N.J. He later transferred to the Experimental Station near Wilmington, where he became the research division head for the elastomers division. During his 40-year career, he was involved in the development and production of numerous synthetic rubber products such as Neoprene, Nordel and Ure-thane-Nordel combinations, used in the production of products such as tires, golf balls, heels for shoes and car seats.

Mr. Verbanc held nearly 40 patents. After retiring in 1978, a grand-niece of Margaret Mitchell, author of "Gone With the Wind." She had been a Democratic Party campaign volunteer during Sen. Joseph Biden's first run for the U.S. Senate and David N.

Levinson's 1992 gubernatorial campaign. She was a 1956 graduate of Conrad High School. She and her husband, William C. Baumgardt, celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary June 2. Survivors: husband; sons, Carl of Townsend, and Kenneth of Glenville, daughter, Robin Anne Ward of Townsend; mother, Mary Otwell Davis of Wilmington; brothers, Peter Davis of Arlington, and Richard Davis and Neal Davis, both of Wilmington; sister, Carolyn Cummins of Wilmington; five grandchildren, five stepgrand-children and a stepgreat-grand-child.

Mrs. Carter had worked at Bryan's Drug Store on Loocker-man Street, Dover, had been a nurse's aide at Kent General Hospital in Dover, and had been a manager at the day-care center on the Dover Force Base. She was a member of trip Spv- enth Day Adventist Church in Dover and was former associate pastor at the Dover Church and was pastor of the Sussex Central Church in Georgetown.
