Teachers seek in-service grant OXFORD, Pa. The Oxford Area School Board last week approved submitting a proposal for a state grant to pay for some in-service training and curriculum development for its staff. The Improvement of Instruction grant of $7,136 would pay substitutes so teachers in the program can take off half days to observe other districts or attend colleges to research one of five areas, including computer science.

The teachers will then share their knowledge with other district teachers and update their curriculum accordingly. Planning office staff is expanded ELKTON, Md. The Office of Planning and Economic Development received permission to expand its staff by two Tuesday when the Cecil County commissioners voted to use a $279,216 federal grant for housing rehabilitation. Money will be available to low-income county residents who live outside an incorporated town. Loans will be deferred until a project coordinator and a rehabilitation specialist inspect progress on the buildings.

They will be hired by contract for a time period contingent on renewal of the grant. it Its aRoyal Gdand Opening! At the groundbreaking ceremony on Nov. 17, Lane, the only female member of the town's council, noted Sample's diligent efforts. "She works as hard as he does," Lane said.

"It's a very energetic undertaking in that skirt. There'd have to be a point where I would draw the line on authenticity and wear blue jeans." But authenticity is the couple's main goal. By the time they finish their model Pioneer Homestead next spring, each of the estimated 74 logs will have been marked, chopped, smoothed and carefully placed by both pairs of hands. The Scouts will have a locked room in the basement for storing equipment, but the remainder of the cabin will be accessible to the public, in accordance with Maryland's Department of Natural Resources Open Space grant program, which funded 75 percent of the project. The town is paying the remaining portion of the estimated $20,000 job, which mostly involves the engineering and construction of the basement. The only modern convenience aside from the rest-rooms is concrete, which will be in the foundation. Vaughn and Sample, who have donated their time, are using only those materials and technology that were available to the early settlers: Pokeberries to chalk lines, gravity pulling a weight on a string to square the logs, clay and lime for mortar, and time as a natural preservative. "Mother nature gives us everything we need," Vaughn said.

"She teaches us everything we need to know." If she leaves any gaps, however, an interested craftsman can always be found to fill in the blanks. A blacksmith at the Char-lestown fair taught the couple how to make the nails they will use on their cabin, and Vaughn taught Sample how to split white oak logs into shingles with a maul and froe. Sample, a 23-year-old mother of two, contributes more to the operation than well-cooked meals. She has helped in preparing the logs and will be fully responsible for Soft. piTi ii Relocation WE WILL SOON BE MOVING TO: 3205 Concord Pike.
