Larry LaMotte, CNN's Los Angeles bureau chief, said that the word has come out of Atlanta to tighten "the screws a little bit in order to be more efficient." The trimming measures are coming just as Turner is facing the gravest challenge yet to his cable-news monopoly. On June 21, Group (Westinghouse) Satellite Communications and ABC launched their joint venture, Satellite News Chan- Some observers in the cable industry are pointing to Turner's 6-month-old CNN2 all-news service as the root of the problems.
