Census Of City Almost In New Enumerators To Finish Task The interim census of Wilmington will be completed in another month to six weeks, it was learned today. A similar census being conducted in Bridgeville has been completed except for a callback to homes missed on the first round. D. Russell Friend, in charge of the census for the division of urban affairs at the University of Delaware, said nearly 12 of the 14 areas in the city are completed. The areas remaining to be done generally include that area west of Market Street between the Brandywine River and I Delaware and Pennsylvania Avenues east of the railroad bridge.

BECAUSE most of the cen- enumerators were college students who have returned to classes, Friend said a new group of about 25 enumerators, mostly, Thursday adults, will and be Friday trained to complete job. He estimated that the work should done in about a month, with several more weeks needed to call on homes missed the first time around. When all of the approximately 30,000 dwellings city have been visited, Friend said, the data cards will be coded and processed and the information released in three categories: child information, adult information, and housing information. This will take another six to nine months to complete, Friend said. ALL THE data collected in the Bridgeville census will be combined into a single package unit.

It is anticipated this will be ready before the end of the year, according to Friend. Next on the statewide census project, 200,000 will be a residents count of New the Castle County outside of Wilmington and then the rest of the state. The interim census will then become a permanent project, with every area in the state covered once every three years, Friend said. It is hoped to have the New Castle County census done by the end of next year and the entire state by the end of the third year. From then on, a third of the state will be covered annually.

The information obtained from the surveys is not intended to duplicate findings of the federal census but to supplement and update these statistics. Crash Hurts City Man PORT DEPOSIT, Md. The youngster received bruises and cuts of the face and the worker received bruises. Both were treated and released from Harford Memorial Hospital, Havre de Grace. Brumbaugh was arrested on a charge of reckless driving.

Oct. 1 GI Pay Hike Probable Senate Agrees To Conference WASHINGTON (P) Prospects are bright that Congress will enact a pay increase of some $1.2 billion a year for the military forces, effective Oct.

1. The Senate agreed yesterday to try to comprise differences with the House over the proposed increase. This broke long deadlock. Actual conferences will begin tomorrow. The House passed last May a bill for an increase at an estimated annual cost of $1.222 billion.

The Senate approved a differing version Aug. 6 with an estimated cost of $1.227 billion. The House on Aug. 12 asked the usual conference meeting of representatives from the House with representatives from the Senate -to adjust differences. IN AN EFFORT to get House leaders to accept numerous Senate changes, the Senate delayed action on the House request until yesterday.

Sen. Richard B. Russell, D- chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he is confident the increases will apply Oct. 1 even if final passage of the legislation is delayed past that date. Whatever is worked out by the conference committee will be subject to approval by the House and Senate.

Acting as Senate spokesmen at the conference will be Sens. Russell, Howard W. Cannon, Sam J. Ervin D- N.C., and Leverett Saltonstall, R-Mass. REP.

L. MENDEL Rivers, D. S.C., heads the House conferees, who include Reps. Phillip J. Philbin, F.

Edward Hebert, Arthur Winstead, Walter Norbald, William H. Bates, R- and William G. Bray, R-Ind. Nearly 2 million of the more than 2.5 million officers and enlisted personnel now on ac. tive military duty would get increases under the Senate version.

The House bill proposed to restrict pay increases to those with more than two years service. Both bills would provide higher pay for reservists while training and for most retired personnel. Brown, information officer at the Dover Air Force Base, will retire from the service at the end of this week to study journalism.

Campbell, Ky. Maj. Brown, who lives in Dover with his wife and two children, intends to return to his home in Houston, Texas, where he will attend the University of Houston. He will study journalism and plans to either teach or enter that field upon completing his studies. L.A.

A strike of employes of the Seven-Up bottling plant entered its second day today with no indication of a settlement.

Negotiations on an initial contract between Seven Up Company of Wilmington, owner of the plant, and Teamster Union Local 830 are going on in Philadelphia, according to Anthony Franchetti, company sales manager. The Philadelphia bottling company has same Seven management as the local plant, he said. The workers recently named the union their bargaining agent. Franchetti said the principal question is one of wages. The Seven-Up plant is the only bottling operation in Delaware that has a union shop, Franchetti said.

Picket lines around the plant, at Philadelphia Pike and Harvey Road, Claymont, have shut down operations and idled 3 36 workers, including drivers.
