NEWS JOURNAL Monday, July 3, 2006 www.delawareonline.com OBITUARIES Thomas L. Emerson Smyrna, DE, died at home surrounded by his loving family, Saturday July 1, 2006. He was 78. Mr. Emerson was born November 8, 1927 in Beverly, NJ, the son of the late Thomas L.

Emerson and Hilda Poole. Mr. Emerson worked for the State of Delaware Department of Corrections in Smyrna as a laundry and clothing supervisor for 25 years before retiring in 1989. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, a life member of VFW Post a member of the American, Post Legion life David C. a member of the DAV and a member of the Smyrna-Clayton Moose Lodge.

Mr. Emerson was one of the original of the Smyrna-Clayton founders. League, where he managed boys baseball and girls softball teams and was also an umpire for several years. He also enjoyed dancing and helping with fund raisers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Green Emerson, in 1985; a son, Robin Emerson, in 1965; a daughter, Sandra Brown, in 1994; a grandson, Samuel Everage, in 1992; and a daughter-in-law, Margaret Emerson, in 1993.

He is survived by 2 sons, Thomas L. Emerson, III of Smyrna, DE and Charles R. Emerson and his wife, Sheree, of Smyrna, DE; 6 daughters, Jean Everage and her husband Sam, Elaine Charles and her husband, Jim, Sharon Durham and Karen Pritt, all of Smyrna, DE, Faye Carrigan and her husband, Mike, of Kennett Square, PA and Lisa Wilk of Leavenworth, KS; a brother, Wade Poole of Camden, DE; 2 sisters, Barbara Karabin of Springfield, PA and Sandra Muncey of Kate, TX; 15 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and his special friend, Gloria Ratcliff. A service will be held on Friday, July 7, 2006, at 11 am at the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, DE, where friends may call Thursday, July 6, 2006, from 6- 9 pm. Fie, Sr. Fie, age 81 of Maggie, Valley, NC, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at the Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native, of Translyvania County and the son the late Laburn A.

Fie and Vergie Frady Fie. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Polk City, FL and was employed by Delmarva Power and Light Company until his retirement. Mr. Fie was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. He was a WWII United States Navy Veteran.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Fleming Fie, who died in 1989. He is survived by 1 daughter, Sharon Hancock and her husband, Jerry, of Polk City, FL; 1 son, James R. 10th Street, Suite $1002, Wilmington, DE 19801. Vivian W. Goodley Age 77, of Newark, DE, passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2006. Viv was the Director of Hockessin Child Care where she has been employed since 1982. She was a former softball, basketball and player.

Viv, while playing for Bethany Baptist Church, was the top scorer in the Women's Basketball League with 649 points in one season which still stands today. Viv was the secretary and treasurer of many bowling leagues and a member of White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church. Viv's life was built around both her families, the one in which she was born and the one she created. Nothing or no one was allowed between. Viv loved them as much as they loved her and there was nothing she for them.

The 4 generations of family enjoyed vacationing together, with Disney World being their favorite destination. Viv's dream vacation, 2 years ago, was in CA, AZ, and Las Vegas, Viv supported her husband achievements in the National Senior Olympics in which he won 2 gold medals. She is survived by her husband, James Goodley; daughters, Sharon G. Au and her husband, James, of Boalsburg, PA Beetle GoodleyCondiff and her husband, Ken, of Newark, DE; 1 sister, Lois W. Tweedy of Hockessin, DE: 1 brother, Orville Wright of Wilmington, DE; grandchildren, Rik and Shannon Messick, Jimmy and Erin Au, Johnny Au, and Sharon Condiff; 4 great grandchildren, Jimbo, Nicky, Ellie, and Mia.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2006, at at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Road, where family and friends may call on Wednesday evening from 7-9 pm. Interment be in White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Helen Virginia (Sheridan) Granger Age 83, of Wilmington, DE, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2006. She died peacefully at home with family by her side. She was a devoted wife and loving mother who will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Ronald Van Lankford, Jr. Age 62 of Seaford, DE, died Sunday, July 2, 2006, at his residence. Born in Salisbury, MD, the son of the Beatrice Marine and Ronald V. Lankford, he was an industrial electrician at the DuPont Company in Seaford, retiring in 1994 after 29 years service. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Seaford, Hebron Lodge Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Nanticoke Sportsman's Club and the former owner of Lankford's Gun Shop.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn "Kay" Blocker Lankford; a son, David (Clark) Lankford of Seaford, DE; 2 sisters, Pamela L. Good of Seaford, DE and Joyce L. Dayse of Richmond, VA; a grandson; and a great great-granddaughter. A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, July 5, 2006. at 2 pm in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Alfriston Seaford.

Madora, age 84, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 29, 2006, in the presence of his loving wife and family. Born in Wilmington on July 14, 1921, son of the late Frank Madora and Julia DeNest Madora. Mr. Madora was graduate of Wilmington High School. He attended Drexel University, where he majored in machine design and received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering after 9 years of dedicated evening coursework.

From 1940 to 1972, he was employed the BaldwinLima Hamilton the Director Corporation, of Reretiring as search and Development for Hydro-Machines. In 1972, Mr. Madora worked as the Assistant to the President of James Leffel Company, Springfield, OH, before accepting the position of Director of Public Works of New Castle County in 1973. During his tenure with New Castle County, he honored by the Delaware Solid Waste Authority and the National Center for Resource Recovery, and upon his retirement in 1983, by the New Castle County Executive and "Citizens of New Castle County" for his years of dedicated, loyal and distinguished service. He also received over 10 resolutions from New Castle County Council in honor of his commitment and dedication.

For his extraordinary efforts in resolving labormanagement disputes, Mr. Madora was also named "Director of the Year" by Local Union which represents New Castle County employees. Following his retirement from government service, he joined Kidde Consultants as Senior Vice-President of Engineering. Active in his community throughout his life, Mr. Madora served as the commissioner of the Delaware River and Bay Authority and was a member of both the New Castle County Board of Adjustment and the Governor's Council on Aging.

He was also a past president of the Swanwyck Gardens Civic Association and a faithful volunteer for the Democratic party. His professional affiliations as a mechanical engineer included APWA, the ASTM, and the ASME." He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Violet R. (Glez) Madora; 5 children, Major General A.J. Madora (U.S. Ret.) of Manassas, VA, William F.

She had an adventurous spirit and loved to laugh at most anything, no matter how absurd. Her generous and warm heart drew people to her and she was "grandmom" and "Aunt Mary" to many outside her family. She lived a good, full life and the world is a better place for her having been here.

in Pittston, PA, daughter of the late William J. and Angela (McGuire) Langan. The famimoved to Jersey City shortly thereafter and Ruth's late sister, Mary Therese, and her brother, Michael, were born. Mrs. Sweeney graduated from Mary Immaculate Hospital School of Nursing in Jamaica, NY in 1947.

Following graduation, Ruth married her late husband, Raymond G. Sweeney and they moved to Forest Hills, NY where their first son, Raymond, was born. The family then moved Wilmington where Brian, Mary and Joe were born. In 1975, her husband passed away. Ruth was determined to put her children through college so she moved forward and earned a Master's degree in Counseling from Wilmington College.

She then as a school nurse at St. Elizabeth High, St. Mark's High and the School District, all in the Wilmington area, for nearly 25 years. After an early retirement, she sold her home in Wilmington and moved to Rehoboth Beach. She went to work at Beebe a as a Same Day Surgery Pre-Op Nurse, retiring in 1998 after 7 years with Beebe.

Mrs. Sweeney is survived by her 3 sons, Raymond Sweeney and his wife, Martha, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, Brian Sweeney of Newark, DE and Joseph Sweeney and his wife, Debbie, of Newark, DE; her daughter, Mary Previtera and her husband, Martin, of Rehoboth Beach, DE; 4 grandchildren, Sean, Shannon, Jennifer and Patrick Sweeney; 1 greatgranddaughter, Kayla Sweeney; her brother, Michael Langan and his wife, Ann, of Pt. Pleasant, NJ; and an abundance of personal and professional friends. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 5, at 11 am at St. Edmond's Catholic Church, King Charles and Laurel Streets, Rehoboth Beach, with Father Charles Brown, Ill officiating.
