a a a a a a a a a OBITUARIES WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14, 2001 THE NEWS JOURNAL B5 Roy L. Schuyler, Jr. Age 85 of Hockessin, DE died Sunday, March 11, 2001 at Cokesbury Village. A Leading figure in the growth of the US plastics industry, he retired from the a DuPont Company on December as Vice President and General Manager of the Organic Chemicals Department after a distinguished career of almost 41 years. For nearly 3 decades, Schuyler was a major contributor to the rapid growth and diversification of duPont's plastics business.

He was named head of the Polychemicals Department in 1967 and was designated Vice President and General Manager 5 years later. Products developed during his tenure in plastics included "Vespel" polymide shapes and parts, "Teflon" FEP fleurocarbon resins, "Nafion" perfluorinated membranes, "Surlyn" ionomer resins, "Stren" monofilament fishing line, "Aldy!" polyethylene pipe and others. Schuyler excelled at developing. leadership within his organization. He was once quoted as saying, "In retrospect, one of the greatest joys of my retirement has been watching those with whom I worked move on to positions of greater responsibility." Included in that number are 2 former chief executive officers who served as his assistant general managers, several Executive Committee and Board members and many department heads.

Schuyler joined the company in 1937 as a chemist in the Explosives Department. During WW Il he served in executive positions in military explosives plants operated for the federal government in Memphis, TN, Kankakee, IL and Childersburg, AL. In 1946 he was named Assistant Superintendent of Inspection at the plastics plant in Arlington, NJ. In 1948 he was named Assistant Plant Manager at the Washington Works near Parkersburg, WV and in 1951 became the Plant Manager at the Victoria plant. Two years later, he was promoted to Assistant Production Manager in Wilmington, DE.

After serving as Assistant Sales Director, he was named Director of the newly formed Polyolefins Division in 1960. The following year he was promoted to Assistant General Manager of the Polychemicals Department later renamed the Plastics Department in 1967 and in 1972 7 was appointed Corporate Vice President General Manager of the Plastics Department. He was designated vice Presdient and general Manager of the Organic chemicals Department in September, 1974. Schuyler served on the Board of Directors of DuPont of Canada from 1970-1980 was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma, Phi Lambda Upsilon Chemical Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He was a former member of Board of Directors of both the American Petroleum Institute and the society of the Plastics Industry.

Schuyler was born in Lock Haven, PA March 24, 1915, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Roy L. Schuyler, Sr. He graduated from the Pennsylvania University in 1937 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering.

Schuyler was as the first person ever to play football, major in chemical engineering and graduate from Penn State. He played football for 4 years and earned varsity letters as an outstanding offensive and defensive lineman. Upon graduation, he was offered professional football contracts by the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chicago Bears, and the old Chicago Cardinals. He opted for employment with DuPont, but still played professional football in the old Eastern Conference League. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.

A brilliant visionary with a deeply ingrained sense of fair play, he was honest to a fault. Paradoxically, he was also a recognized character with a penchant for practical jokes and an accomplished raconteur. His gardening prowess was well known among his friends and neighbors who often benefited form his expertise and generosity. Roy L. Schuyler, Jr.

was married to the late Delcena Crabtree Schuyler of State College, PA (the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in organic chemistry at Penn State) on December 9, 1939. They shared almost 60 years of devoted marriage and are survived by a daughter, Rebecca Schuyler Bryan of Malvern, PA; 3 sons, John Phillip Schuyler of Wilmington, DE; Roy Lewis Schuyler III of Avondale, PA and Peter Allen Schuyler of Hockessin, DE; 8 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, March 15th at Cokesbury Village, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE. Interment will be private.

Mischler Age 72 of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 11, 2001 in the Christiana Hospital surrounded by his family. George served in the US Navy. He worked in the grocery business for many years.

Mondzelewski Age 58 of New Castle, DE died March 12, 2001 in the Christiana Hospital. Mr.

Mondzelewski was a meat cutter for 38 years, retiring from Pathmark Supermarkets. He a member of the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca E. of 35, years; 2 sisters, Joan A. Hewett of Elsmere and Toni Ann Whitaker of Hockessin; nieces and nephews; 1 great nephew.

Davis Montgomery was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 12, 2001 after suffering a long illness with diabetes and congestive heart failure. Doris was born in Baltimore City, MD on October 28, 1938 of the late Charles Howard and Florence Hughes Reed Armstrong. After losing both parents at the age of 5, Doris went to live on the Old Philadelphia Farm near Earleville, the foster daughter of Arthur Burke and Margaret Bailey where she lived for 30 years. Doris graduated from Cecilton High School 1957. She worked many years at the Kitty Knight House and Union Hospital.

She spent a lifetime of service to our Lord at Zion and St. Pauls United Methodist Churches as a Sunday school teacher, and later at Baldwin United Methodist Church in Elk Mills, MD. She was an active member of the Daughters of America, Elkton Council She enjoyed flowers and gardening. Doris is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 27 years, Lewis I. Montgomery, Sr.

She was member of East Bangor United Methodist Church, where she was serving on the administrative council and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

Jane enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Red Clay Garden Club in Newark, DE. She did volunteer work for the Union Hospital in Elkton, MD. In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Theodore J. Thomas of Joppa, MD; and 3 daughters, Diane Robertson of Aberdeen, MD, Cindi Filasky of Middletown, DE and Linda Bellin of Earleville, MD; as well as 7 grandchildren. Picken was a machinist at Gates Engineering in Wilmington, retiring in 1995 after 28 years. After retirement he did maintenance work at the Masonic Home of Delaware. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Picken was a member of the Ionic Lodge AF AM in Wilmington, the Delaware Consistory, the Tall Cedars of Forrest where he was a member of the Clown Unit, the American Legion Joseph Stahl, Post the Chapel of Four Chaplains in Philadelphia, PA.

Her husband of 59 years, Frank L. Roberts, passed away in 1998. Born in Long Island, NY, she was the daughter of the late Franklin and Lydia (Keefer) Haley. She was also predeceased by 1 daughter, Carol Roberts; and 2 brothers, Kenneth F. Haley and Lawrence Haley.

Dorothy retired in 1980 as a seamstress. She was a graduate of P.S. duPont High School and the University of Delaware. She was a former member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Wilmington. In her younger years, she enjoyed boating and fishing at the Easter Shore, and was an avid reader and gardener.

She is survived by 3 sons, Frank L. "Robbie" Roberts Ill and his wife, Peggy of Wilmington, Richard H. Roberts and his wife, Judy of Newark, Bruce D. Roberts and his wife, Joyce of Salisbury, MD; a daughter, Carole R. Dubbs and her husband, Mike of Laguna Niguel, grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Slider Age 82, formerly of Coatesville, PA, died Monday, March 12, 2001 at the Ingleside Care Center in Hockessin, DE. Elizabeth was the wife of the late Lowell H. Slider who died in 1984. Born in Coatesville, PA to the late Peter J. and Cora Doan Short, she was a 1937 graduate of Coatesville High School.

She was a homemaker, and resided in Hockessin, DE for the past 10 years. She was a member of St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church in Coatesville and the Cecilians. She is survived by 2 daughters, Rebecca L. Sauder of Hockessin, DE, Kathleen E.

by CONGO FUNERAL HOME. Melville C. Taylor, Sr. Age 87 of Harrington died at Bayhealth Medical Memorial Hospital on Sunday, March 11, 2001. Mr.

Taylor was avid ball in high school. As a of the Eastern Shore Baseball League, was given the nickname "Homerun His skill of baseball was SO great, he could tell where the was going to the second the ball hit the bat. After farming a number of years, Mr. Taylor and Joseph Konesey became partners in 1947 and began selling Kaiser and Frazier automobiles, which later became Taylor Motors until 1954. In 1955 and 1956, Mr.

Taylor served as Assistant Chief Clerk in the House of Representatives. In 1957, he became a state highway inspector and later became the Supervisor of the State Highway Maintenance Yard in Harrington, retiring from the Highway Department in 1975. After retiring, he and his wife Mary managed Drexel Court Motel in of Lakes, FL which they had purchased several years before retiring. He finally retired fully at the age of 70. Mr.

Taylor has been a member of the Harrington Lions Club for over 50 years, a lifetime associates member of the Harrington Fire a charter member of the Harrington Moose Lodge, a member of Prospect United Methodist Church and an associate member of the First United Methodist Church in Land of Lakes, FL. His favorite hobby during retirement was playing golf. Preceded in death by his parents, C. Arthur Taylor and Mae L. Taylor; a son, William C.

Taylor; a brother, Leonard A. Taylor; and a sister, Catherine Donovan. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Wright Taylor of Harrington; a son and his wife, Charles and Kathleen Taylor of Harrington; a daughter and her husband, Edna Mae and Anthony Gallo of Harrington; a brother, J. Edward Taylor of Harrington; 10 grandchildren; 13. great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren.

Francis Hospital. Mr. Thomas had worked for North American Smelting Company in New Castle. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. His wife, Mary Ann (Kelley) Thomas, died in 1999.

A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Friday, March 16, 2001 at the SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 1000 N. DuPont Pkwy, Wilmington Manor, New Castle.
